Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome was established in 1952, the same year in which diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka, then Ceylon, and the Italian Republic were formally established. Since its founding, the Mission has served as Sri Lanka’s principal diplomatic representation in Italy and as an important centre for consular, diplomatic, cultural and community engagement.

From its base in Rome, the Embassy represents Sri Lanka’s interests in Italy while also maintaining accreditation to Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Albania and San Marino. This wider responsibility gives the Mission an important regional role, supporting Sri Lanka’s relations across the Mediterranean and providing official assistance to Sri Lankan communities and service recipients within its area of responsibility.

The Embassy also benefits from Rome’s position as a major centre of international diplomacy. As the city hosts institutions such as FAO, WFP, IFAD and ICCROM, the Mission plays an active role in representing Sri Lanka in engagements with Rome-based international organizations, particularly in areas linked to food security, agriculture, development and cultural heritage.

The Chancery of the Embassy is located at Via Adige, 2, in the Parioli area of Rome. From this office, the Mission carries out its daily diplomatic and consular functions, welcoming members of the Sri Lankan community, Italian partners, official visitors and representatives of international organizations.

Since its establishment, successive Sri Lankan Ambassadors and officers of the Foreign Service have contributed to the development of the Mission and its work in Italy. Today, the Embassy continues to build on this history by providing consular services, promoting Sri Lanka’s national interests, strengthening official engagement and maintaining close links with the Sri Lankan community in Italy and accredited countries.

Working / Consular Hours:

Monday to Friday, 09.00 a.m. to 03.00 p.m.

The Embassy also provides Sunday Consular Service one Sunday per month, usually the second Sunday of the month, from 09.00 a.m. to 01.00 p.m., according to the published annual schedule.

The Chancery of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome, located at Via Adige, 2, serves as the Mission’s main diplomatic and consular office in Italy.

The Embassy supports the Sri Lankan community in Italy through consular services, official notices, cultural engagement and community outreach.

Through its location in Rome, the Embassy also engages with Italy, accredited countries and Rome-based international organizations, helping to advance Sri Lanka’s diplomatic, economic and cultural relations.
