POLITICAL RELATIONS:

Sri Lanka established Diplomatic relations with Cyprus in 1963. Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Italy is concurrently accredited to Cyprus. The High Commissioner of Cyprus in New Delhi is concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka.

Cyprus has been a friend of Sri Lanka and a strong supporter of a united Sri Lanka. The close and cordial relations between the two countries are based on mutual respect for the unity and sovereignty of our countries.

SRI LANKAN WORKERS:

There are approximately 5700 Sri Lankan workers in Cyprus. The Sri Lankan migrant workforce in Cyprus is mainly employed as domestic helpers, whilst others are employed in hotels and restaurants, construction, agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

A significant number of Sri Lankan students are pursuing undergraduate and post graduate studies in Universities in Cyprus, particularly in the field of medicine and engineering. Also appreciate the scholarships offered by Cyprus to Sri Lanka.

SRI LANKA’S TRADE WITH CYPRUS:

Bilateral trade between the countries could be further diversified and both countries could explore the possibility of direct import of tea from Sri Lanka, which will be mutually beneficial for Cypriot tea importers and consumers as well as Sri Lankan exporters.

There is considerable potential for Cyprus investments in Sri Lanka particularly in the areas of tourism, infrastructure development, freight and logistics, food processing and agriculture.

Tea and articles of apparel and clothing are the main exports to Cyprus while medicines, preparations of vegetables, fruit, nuts or other parts of plants, beverages, spirits and vinegar are imported from Cyprus.
